Post To retire or not to retire?
No...not me. Though, if I could retire now...I would. I have a LOT I'd LOVE to be doing...he heh.

But, no...this is about retiring a daily driver ... specifically an older daily driver. I got to thinking about this as I washed/waxed my '87 MC LS today, a far cry from what I was doing LAST Saturday:

At least tomorrow I'll be driving my older 4 MCs....

Yes, I'm looking for a winter beater right now...but, I'm wondering if I should retire the '87 MC LS from daily status altogether. I don't really want to....but, well, maybe it'd be better.

So...for those driving older cars (older than 1995, including 1970-1988 MCs)...

Why keep daily driving your car?

Have you thought about getting something newer? If so...why? If not...why not?

And...for those that have retired an older car (1995 and older, including 1970-1988 MCs) and bought something newer...

What led you to that decision? What was the major factor?

What did you get newer? Are you glad you retired and replaced your daily driver?

Well Cort I've road both sides of the fence...

My first daily driver was a 95 Lumina, it got over 30 MPG average around town/higway. I've never seen a Lumina since then get that kind of milage. Sadly the mtor locked down in the late summer of 2007.

Then I went to driving my 70 Monte everyday(yeah yeah the one I hit the fence with) . Drove it until I sold it at the Cherokeet, NC Rod run in November of 2007. Then went and bought a 1972 Monte Carlo 402 U-Code car. About the same on fuel as the other until the cam went sour.

After I sold it and it went to West Palm Beach, Fla. I bought a 1999 Lumina with 76k original miles on it. After head gasket issues at 78k miles, and a little Blue Devil sealant which fixed it I bought my 1986 Monte Carlo SS back from my mom.

So as of today I drive an 86 Monte SS 305HO 193k miles. It gets around 17 MPG(city and highway average). I just be easy on the gas pedal and just don't do any joy riding like I could in the Lumina. I don't live in rust country so its not hurting that car to be drove all the time.

Cort, I say retire your 87 SS from the Salt, and get a rough Monte that is already has rust issues maybe, but a good reliable car.

CONGRATS on getting the '86 MC SS back, Jared! You have pics of it, by chance?
